Is Anything Open in Barcelona on Sunday?
Yes, but not where you think. The Gothic Quarter bookshop you walked past on Friday is closed. The boutique on a side street in Grà cia is closed. The hardware store is closed. Sunday is the rest day, protected by Catalan law, and the shutters stay down.
The law divides shops into categories. Small independent retailers cannot open on Sunday unless they qualify for a narrow exemption. Large-format stores, shops inside designated tourist zones, and a handful of essential services play by different rules. The logic is structural: a small shop owner works a split shift Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 14:00 then 17:00 to 20:30. Sunday is the only full day off. The regulation protects that.
So use Sunday for the beach, a museum, or a long lunch. Do your clothes shopping on Saturday morning. If you spot something in a small shop on Saturday, buy it on the spot. "Come back tomorrow" is not a strategy here.
Which Shops Are Closed on Sunday?
Independent boutiques, bakeries away from tourist corridors, gift shops, hardware stores: almost all closed. The pattern is consistent. Saturday morning: open, usually 10:00 to 14:00. Saturday afternoon: closed. Sunday: closed all day.
And do not assume a shop that was shut Sunday will open Monday. Many independent retailers take Monday as their rest day instead. A shop in Grà cia or Poble Sec might be closed Sunday and Monday, reopening Tuesday morning. Check before you cross the city.
Shopping Centres That Open on Sunday
Large shopping centres and big-chain stores are the exception. Most open Sunday on a continuous schedule, 10:00 to 21:00 or 22:00.
Head here on a Sunday: - Maremagnum (Port Vell) - Westfield La Maquinista (Sant Andreu) - Diagonal Mar (Sant MartÃ) - L'Illa Diagonal (Les Corts) - El Corte Inglés (the flagship on Plaça de Catalunya opens Sunday; check individual locations)
These venues clear the square-metre threshold that exempts them from the Sunday ban. They count as tourist attractions and employment centres where staff have agreed to Sunday work. A large-format store outside a designated zone may still face restrictions, but every centre listed above sits inside a zone that permits Sunday opening.
Where Tourist-Area Shops Open on Sunday
Shops in Barcelona's main tourist zones operate under looser rules. The Catalan government classifies these as "tourist areas," and the restrictions relax.
The zones where Sunday shopping is common: - Plaça de Catalunya and Portal de l'Àngel (the main shopping strip) - Las Ramblas (especially the lower half near the port) - Passeig de Grà cia (luxury brands and department stores) - Barceloneta beachfront - Gothic Quarter (some souvenir and gift shops, but not all)
Even here, it is patchy. A shop two streets off the main drag may be closed. A shop that runs 10:00 to 20:30 on weekdays might open 11:00 to 19:00 on Sunday, or close earlier. Do not assume the same hours apply.
Sunday Trading During the Christmas Season
The Christmas season rewrites the rules. Catalan law lets all shops in Barcelona open on the Sundays leading up to Christmas Day and sometimes the Sunday before Three Kings' Day.
In 2026, the open Sundays are 6, 13, 20 and 27 December. (27 December falls right after Sant Esteve, a Catalan public holiday on 26 December. Most shops open regardless.)
During this window, even small neighbourhood shops can open. Hours stretch: some stay open until 22:00 in the final week before Christmas. Then the exception ends. On the first Sunday in January, the rules snap back. A shop open on a Sunday in late December will not be open on a Sunday in February.
Supermarkets Open on Sunday
You will not go hungry. Most major supermarkets open Sunday, usually with reduced hours.
Know the chains: - Mercadona: closed Sunday. The largest chain in Spain takes the day off entirely. - Carrefour Express: typically open Sunday, 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. - Bonpreu / Esclat: some locations open Sunday morning, 09:00 to 14:00. - Condis: many locations open Sunday, 10:00 to 14:00. - Dia: some open Sunday; hours vary by location.
Need bread, milk, or wine and it is Sunday evening? Convenience stores and bazares, the Chinese-run general stores on almost every corner, open every day of the year. The selection is limited and prices run higher than a supermarket. But they work. Do your full grocery shop on Saturday. Use the corner store for the missing piece.
Why Are Restaurants Closed on Monday?
Sunday is for shop closures. Monday is for restaurant closures. Many restaurants outside the tourist zones close on Monday. Some close Sunday evening instead. A few close Tuesday.
This is not law. It is business. Monday is the slowest night for dining out, so restaurant staff take their day off then. In Grà cia, Sants, or Poble Sec, assume Monday closures are the norm. In the city centre and the Eixample, more restaurants stay open seven days.
Before you go, check the restaurant's listing. Look for "closed on Mondays" or "closed on Sunday evenings." If you are travelling, do your retail on Saturday. Treat Sunday as a day for experiences, not errands. And if you are here in the Christmas season, use the extended Sunday hours, but do not expect them in January.
